What are the features of growing zucchini?
Zucchini is the most common and beloved relative of pumpkin. It is unpretentious, has such valuable qualities as early maturity, multiple fruits, and zucchini is the most cold-resistant of all pumpkin crops.
Zucchini seeds germinate at a temperature of +15+16°C literally on the 4-5th day. Since the plants begin to bear fruit 45-60 days after germination, it is easiest to sow it with dry seeds directly into the ground.
If you place the zucchini in the sun and insulated soil, then they can be planted very early (in Estonia - at the beginning of May), but, of course, under a agrotextile cover until the threat of night frosts has passed.
It is better to grow bush squash - zucchini, because they grow compactly and do not take up much space on the site, they can be planted at a distance of 60-70 cm from each other. In terms of yield, they are exactly the same as climbing ones.
All pumpkins (except cucumber) come from deserts or semi-deserts, and therefore, unlike cucumbers, do not like humid air and soil, they need dry air and semi-dry warm soil in the root zone.
The root system of squash is compact with weak, easily torn off sucking hairs, and therefore they do not like transplants.
Zucchini need potassium and nitrogen, and therefore they should be planted in fertile soil and fed with organic fertilizers throughout the season, especially a solution of fresh manure (1:10) or bird droppings (1:20), or an infusion of weed greens (1:3-5).
But fresh manure is not added to the hole when planting, since it can cause root rot.
Zucchini should not be generously watered: excess moisture in the cell sap causes the fruit to rot right on the bushes.
Zucchini are picked young, then each bush can produce 25-40 fruits over the summer. Young zucchini are the most delicious, you do not need to peel them, they are better preserved and pickled. For winter storage, zucchini must be fully ripened on the bushes.
